Major updates to NMFC classifications are set to take effect on July 19, 2025, and if you ship LTL freight, these changes will directly impact how your shipments are classified, rated, and billed.

At Mexicom Group, we’re committed to helping you stay ahead of these updates to avoid surprises like unexpected charges, delays, or reclassifications. This is just Phase 1 of a broader set of changes coming later in 2025—so early preparation is key.

The July 2025 LTL Classification Changes Interactive Guide

What’s Changing?

The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system is undergoing a significant update. Starting July 19, outdated classifications could lead to:

  • Unexpected freight charges due to misclassification

  • Delays from reclassifications and additional inspections

  • Miscommunication with your logistics partners

  • Disputes and billing issues

NMFTA’s Docket 2025‑1 brings sweeping updates to the NMFC classification system:

  • Shift to density-based classes: A new 13-tier density scale replaces the existing 11-class model, with emphasis on weight-to-volume ratios for many commodities.
  • Simplified commodity listings: Over 2,000 items are being consolidated into broader, more intuitive categories
  • Special handling identifiers: New flags will identify freight that is fragile, high-value, oversized, or otherwise requires extra care
  • Updated tools: NMFTA is launching ClassIT+ on July 15, 2025, as the enhanced digital platform for NMFC lookup and classification
