What does transit time mean in trucking?
Transit time is the total time it takes for goods to get from Point A to Point B. For goods being shipped on a truck across Mexico, the US, and Canada, the transit times are measured in days.

How do you calculate transit time for ground shipping across Canada, the US, and Mexico?
The transit time for ground shipments is calculated by adding 3 components:
- The time it takes to source a truck, plus
- The actual driving time in the Canada/USA portion and in the Mexican portion, plus
- The time it takes for a shipment to cross the US-Mexico border
For an easy calculation of the transit times, just have a look at our infographic map.
The time it takes to source a truck
This step takes from one to two days. During this time, a Logistics Coordinator verifies the shipper requirements and type of service needed, finds a carrier and a truck that meets the requirements and is available on the day needed, and assigns the truck.
The actual driving time in the Canada/USA portion and in the Mexican portion
To calculate the number of days that will take a driver to move a ground shipment from point A to point B is to divide the total number of miles by 500.
So we consider a driver can do 500 miles a day.
This calculation takes into account the driver’s resting times rules in effect in Canada, the US, and Mexico.
Selecting the route
When calculating miles from one point to another, please make sure the route you choose on google maps is not the shortest but the most suitable for good transportation. Grosso modo, roads are classified as roads for transporting goods and roads for transporting people. The type of road chosen for freight transportation depends on the local infrastructure, the weight and volume of an individual shipment, and the type of goods transported.
Driver’s Resting Times
In the United States, Canada, and Mexico, there are regulations that establish obligatory rest time for freight transport drivers.
In general:
In Canada, a driver must drive a maximum of 13 hours per day or per shift. In order to drive again, the driver must be Off-Duty for 8 consecutive hours.
In the United States, a driver can drive for a maximum of 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours out of service. In addition, a 30-minute break should be taken within each 8-hour driving period.
In Mexico, the maximum driving time is 14 hours, after which the driver must take an 8-hour break. In addition, the driver should take a break of 30 minutes every 5 hours.
Team Driving
Some companies, such as Mexicom Logistics, offer team driving for long routes or when transporting loads at night. Having two drivers transporting the load reduces the impact of the mandatory rest times in the total transit time and increases the driver’s safety.
This service brings in an additional driver in the truck. Both drivers take shifts driving the truck to ensure the shipping arrives as fast as possible while respecting the driver’s resting times which are mandatory in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.
The time it takes for a shipment to cross the US-Mexico border
When shipping freight across North American borders, you will quickly notice that the process of transporting goods at the USA-MEX border crossing is a little bit more complex than the pass between the US and Canada.
Two components need to be taken into account regarding transit times at the border crossing:
1- Inspections
2- Freight transport between the two borders, which is a movement made by the “transfer”
